The following pages contain the substance of a course of Lectures delivered, during the last year, to my Pupils atE ton; and the success which has followed my endeavours to smooth the first approach to Science, now induces me to publish them for the use of theS chool. In accordance with this object, my first intention was to treat every subject in the most famiH ar manner. But such a plan I afterwards abandoned as impracticable; for, by swelling my pages, I might have become accountable for the certain and serious evil of a fiiya (iifiX lov, with the uncertain prospect of any equivalent advantage. Some who might otherwise have profited by the work, would have been discouraged by its bulk.
