Synopsis

Follow the life of a reformer's life and work that helped shape Indian public thought. This authoritative biography, Life and Work of Romesh Chunder Dutt, profiles a distinguished civil servant, writer, and public advocate who helped broaden reform in Baroda and across India. Through careful analysis and lively narrative, it traces Dutt’s long career, his international perspective, and his enduring belief in truth, public service, and national self‑government.

The book situates his achievements within the broader currents of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, showing how his ideas and example influenced debates on governance, education, and social reform. It balances personal recollections, official records, and contemporary reception to present a rounded portrait of a man who bridged Indian tradition and Western modernity.

  • Learn how Dutt’s experience in the imperial service shaped his reforms in Baroda and his approach to administration.

  • Explore his role as a public advocate in England and India, and his influence on debates about self‑government and municipal reform.

  • See how translations of epics and his other literary projects connected culture, politics, and national identity.

  • Understand his personal character, leadership style, and the key moments that defined his career.

Ideal for readers of biography, Indian history, and public‑affairs writing, this edition offers clear, accessible insight into a pivotal figure in India's modern transformation.

Présentation de l'éditeur

In introducing this life of an eminent intellectual leader of modern I ndia, there is no need for me to dwell upon particular events in his life, or upon the literary achievements which have made the name of Romesh Dutt widely known in theW est as well as in I ndia. I wish rather to call attention to certain traits which seemed to me and I had opportunities of knowing him intimately during his most mature period to mark him out as a man at once of great capacity and great character. And first of all I would mention his astonishing power of work. Romesh Dutt came from a province the climate and traditions of which are commonly supposed to discourage, in a peculiar degree, the exercise of physical and mental energy ;but there were surely few men of his time, whether Western orE astern, who laboured more continuously and to greater purpose than he. The claims of theS ervice to which he gave the best years of his life were in themselves exacting, and it might well have seemed that such strength as was left over from the discharge of official duties would have been wholly absorbed in such researches as those rendered necessary for the writing of the uH istory of Civilisation in Ancient I ndia. Yet, as the world knows, his work as aG overnment officer and as the historian of Early India formed only a part of his manifold activity.
