Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the constitutional, political, and societal factors that led to the Great Rebellion, more commonly known as the Civil War. The author provides a detailed chronological account of the many secession debates that took place over decades, beginning with the era of Thomas Jefferson. The perspectives and public statements of key statesmen, such as Jefferson and Madison, are examined to highlight how states' rights and the dispute over the expansion of slavery into new territories evolved into a full-blown crisis. This book gives readers an insightful look into the rise of the Republican party and Abraham Lincoln's presidency. It also discusses the arguments for and against secession, and the impact of the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision, which ultimately helped propel the nation into civil war. The book concludes by analyzing how the suppression of the rebellion resulted in major changes in the interpretation of the Constitution and an expansion of the Federal Government's power.
