This book provides for three years work, and is intended for pupils who are beginning to write English. The leading aims of the work are to develop the childs power of thought, to aid him in forming habits of correct expression, and to give him a taste for good literature. In the selection and arrangement of material, constant reference has been had to the needs and the interests of children. Such facts about the English language as are most essential to its correct use are given, and these facts are so presented that the pupil is led to exercise his powers of observation at every step. From beginning to end, every exercise has a definite purpose and forms a part of a systematic and progressive plan of work. Some of the exercises are planned specially to secure accuracy of expression, others to give readiness and fluency of speech, and still others to increase the pupils vocabulary and develop his imagination. Provision is made for both a direct and an indirect application of the facts learned. The pupil is required to apply the different facts as they are presented, but his practice is not confined to the special exercises in which the various points are first considered.
