Synopsis

A vivid look at Crete’s geography, people, and century-spanning struggles.

This book provides a clear account of the island’s physical features and its social life, tracing the hopes and grievances of the Cretan people through deep history. By examining how Crete sits between East and West, the work helps readers understand the larger Greek national story and the island’s place within it. The text frames Crete not only as a collection of places, but as a living history shaped by changing rulers, revolts, and external pressures. It draws on historical records to show how political currents, social life, and long-standing tensions have formed the island’s present. What you’ll experience

  • A grounded picture of Crete’s geography and landscape.
  • Insights into the island’s social life and political development from ancient times forward.
  • Context for the aims and struggles of the Greek nation and its Cretan brothers.
  • Connections between Crete’s history and broader regional events that shaped the modern Mediterranean.
Ideal for readers of history, Mediterranean studies, and readers seeking a clear, accessible portrait of Crete’s past and its enduring impact.

Excerpt from A Short Popular History of Crete

For many weeks I have been receiving from all parts of the kingdom requests for information on the subject of Crete and the relations of the Cretans with the kingdom of Greece. It has been impossible to meet this demand, because the Cretan question and the action of the Greek Government and people can only be explained by telling the island story, and no brief but sufficient summary of Cretan history was to be found. This want is supplied by Mr. Freese in the following chapters, which give an account of the geographical and physical features of the island, sketch its political and social life from the earliest times till now, and show what have been the struggles and aspirations of the whole Hellenic people. It is impossible, Without such a glance back over their stormy and suffering past, to understand the position, or to enter into the feelings and aspirations of the Greek nation or their Cretan brothers. Crete has been a martyr island. It had a thousand years Of changeful history before the Christian era, and, making allowance for a few centuries of peace and prosperity, it may fairly be said to have had a thousand years of struggle and suffering in Christian.
