Despite rather be. cause of my criticism, I am fond of Italy and the Ital ians. ;I tis my desire and privilege here to thank all those persons without whom this volume could never have been writ, ten; and chiefly Victor F. Lawson, editor and publisher of I the Chicago Daily News, in whose service most of the matter contained here was gathered; Thomas Nelson Page, former American Ambassador at Rome, who stood by me (j when I needed support; I lda Roero di Cortanze, who first introduced me to her countrymen; Giuseppe Prezzolini, shrewdest of critics, and MafS oM aifii, most indulgent of friends.
