This book was at the point of completion when the war broke out. I carried the manuscript to A nvers, then to Ostend and to Havre. One of my co-workers found it, and having read it, advised me to publish without waiting longer. On reflection, I have followed this advice: the problems which concerned me in 1914 have not ceased to be problems. On the contrary, they will assert themselves after peace comes, with a force multiplied a hundred-fold by the crushing financial burdens that the war will leave behind it.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex relationship between socialism and the state, exploring the potential pitfalls of confusing the two concepts. The author argues that the rise of state-controlled industries and monopolies, often driven by economic or technological factors rather than socialist ideals, can lead to undesirable consequences if not accompanied by corresponding changes in political and social organization. Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, with its burgeoning socialist movements and growing state intervention in economic affairs, the book examines the diverse perspectives on socialism's role in shaping society. It contrasts the approaches of reformist socialists, revolutionary syndicalists, and social democrats, highlighting their differing views on state power, political action, and the means of achieving a more equitable social order. Through a critical analysis of historical and contemporary examples, the author challenges the notion that state control of industries is synonymous with socialism. Instead, the book advocates for a democratic and participatory form of socialism, where the means of production are managed by the people themselves, rather than by a centralized state apparatus. Ultimately, this book's insights remain relevant in understanding the ongoing debates surrounding the role of the state in modern economies and the pursuit of a just and equitable society.
