Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the art of extemporizing, a skill once considered essential for every church organist. Dating back to the early 20th century, it reflects a time when organists were expected not only to play written music but also to create spontaneous musical pieces during services. The author provides a structured approach to learning extemporization, starting with basic principles like maintaining a steady flow of music and adhering to a chosen meter. The book then progresses to more advanced topics such as harmony, musical form, and choosing appropriate themes. Numerous musical examples illustrate the concepts discussed, offering practical guidance for aspiring improvisers. Themes from familiar hymn tunes are suggested as starting points, with the author emphasizing the importance of selecting melodies that resonate with the audience. The book also explores various musical forms, including marches, waltzes, and the chorale prelude, providing insights into their structures and how to adapt them for improvisation. With its focus on practical techniques and clear explanations, this book offers valuable insights into the art of extemporization, reminding us of the creativity and skill required of organists in the past. The ability to improvise remains a valuable tool for musicians today, fostering spontaneity and a deeper understanding of musical structure. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
