This book places the characteristics of present-day society under its sociological microscope, contrasting them with the social realities of our ancestors. The author argues that while our material existence has improved drastically, our psychological and emotional responses to those changes are still influenced by the subconscious social structures of our ancestors. This is mostly due to the fact that our social institutions, like the family, have origins in poverty and hardship but have not kept up with our material progress. This discrepancy means we often respond to the opportunities and challenges of the present day with the attitudes and insecurities of our less fortunate ancestors, putting us at odds with the realities of our time and limiting our potential. The book suggests that to move forward we need to fully recognize the effects of our social inheritance, acknowledge the artificiality of many of our social structures, and establish new patterns of behavior that fit our modern context. By doing so, we can create a society that not only has material wealth but also one that nurtures our emotional and intellectual needs.

American Social Progress Series is designed to furnish the increasing number of students of our concrete American social life, especially in its manifestation in social problems that have arisen in the larger cities of the United States, a series of brief and clearly written handbooks, stating the newer social thought based upon the accumulated material of recent scientific investigations. Some of the volumes, for which plans are in progress, will be chiefly descriptive, and embody the results of such field investigation of the facts relating to special problems as we have recorded for English conditions in the works of Mr. Charles Booth, Mr. Rowntree, and others. Brevity of statement and conciseness of treatment will be maintained so that these handbooks may be serviceable for collateral reading and class discussion in the various groups of persons, who, in our colleges and educational institutions as well as in clubs and literary societies, are giving attention and study to the social problems of our own time.
