This book examines the complex history of currency in China, from the ancient past to the early 20th century. Drawing on the wisdom of the author's ancestors and previous studies, it continues a line of enquiry first raised by his late father and brother into the subject. Noting the failure of previous efforts that attempted to implement a gold standard, the author argues that such a system, and even a gold exchange standard, would have been unworkable for much of China in that era. Instead, he proposes a carefully managed gold exchange system, supplemented by a circulating currency of silver and copper coins with their value guaranteed by the gold reserve - a pragmatic solution that he argues would have overcome many of the problems posed by a more ambitious attempt at monetary reform at that time.
