The study explores the preferences of children in primary grades for various elements in reading material through an analysis of their responses to 31 samples of poetry, factual prose, and fictional prose. The author first examines the content of 29 primary reading books published between 1824 and 1920 to provide a historical context for the study. This book then describes the methods and results of reading the 31 samples to 601 classes of children in grades one, two, and three, and analyzing their votes to determine which qualities of the samples elicited the greatest interest. The results suggest that children in the primary grades prefer prose over poetry, stories about children over stories about adults, and realistic stories over historical or geographical stories. The author concludes that the interests of children in reading material are complex and varied, and that any attempt to create reading material that will appeal to all children must take into account the wide range of their preferences.
