This book has been issued in answer to a repeated call for a simple presentation of the newer statistical methods in their application to biology. The immediate need which has called it forth is that of a handbook containing the working formuin for use at summer laboratories where material for variationstudy abounds. In order that the book should not be too bulky the text has been condensed as much as is consistent with clearness. This book was already in rough draft when the work of Duncker appeared in Roux sA rchiv. I have made much use of Duncker spaper, especially inC hapter IV. I am indebted toD r. Frederick H. Safford, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at tbe University of Cincinnati and formerly Instructor at Harvard University, for kindly reading the proofs and for valuable advice. To Messrs. Keuffel andE sser, of New York, I am indebted for the use of the electrotypes ofF igures 1and 2. Finally, I cannot fail to acknowledge tbe cordial cooperation which the publishers have given in making the book serviceable. C. B. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book introduces statistical techniques for biologists, especially as applied to variation studies. In the late 19th century, the science of biometrics was in its early stages, and this book served as a guide to researchers seeking to apply the emerging statistical methods to biological data. The author based the book on statistical theory as it existed at the time and incorporated recent developments in the field, such as Duncker's work on statistical methods. The result is a practical volume useful to biologists of the time. The field of biometrics has advanced considerably since this book was written, and more advanced statistical methods are now available. Nonetheless, this book provides a thorough grounding in the essential principles of statistical analysis, demonstrating how statistical methods can be used to organize, analyze, and draw inferences from complex biological data.
