This book insists that horses are not as intelligent as humans believe them to be, and this misunderstanding can lead to dangerous situations with tragic outcomes. However, the author is careful to avoid excessive anthropomorphism, underscoring that horses are, indeed, horses. A horse's instincts are what drive its actions, which are understandable and predictable if we can only look at them from the equine point of view. The author contends that a horse's mind is one-track and that it rebels against domination only sporadically and not as a rule. The author also rejects the idea that horses are capable of faithfulness or any other complex emotion, instead viewing them as basically selfish creatures motivated by food and shelter. The author describes several training techniques for horses. He prefers a gentle and patient approach, starting with basic tasks and gradually increasing the difficulty. This approach, the author argues, produces horses with a superior education and assists in preventing accidents.
