Excerpt from The Life of an Artist
The Garden of Delight, the cradle of Adam, we have all dwelt in it. Those sudden bursts of joy whose source is unknown to us, mysterious smiles that without cause gladden our hearts, are but dim reminiscences of it. Thus does the eye preserve the image of the sun long after it has ceased to look at it. We all treasure in our memories the splendors of a wondrous time, when the light was clearer, the dawn rosier, the air more vibrant, the skies deeper and more softly blue, than they are now.

Jules Breton relates in this volume his memories of boyhood, the aspirations and struggles of youth, and the associations of those later years whenD elacroix, Millet, Corot, Rousseau, Daubigny, and others of that memorable company still lived to the glory of the national art which Breton himself represents so worthily. Of his own great successes he speaks with becoming modesty, but we in America have learned long since to value Breton sbest work wholly apart from the unthinking admiration aroused for the artist whose Evening atF inistere brought a price at theS eney sale inN ew York which was deemed phenomenal until, at theM organ sale in 1886, his painting ofT he First Communion reached the astonishing price of $45,500.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a memoir by the celebrated painter, Jules Breton, in which he presents a series of vivid recollections from his childhood and young adulthood in rural France. Beginning with his earliest memories of a world bathed in perpetual sunshine and filled with the sounds of summer, Breton then moves on to describe his experiences of Catholicism, the seasons, festivals, and his connections to family and community. In this idyllic setting, Breton finds inspiration for his art, and explores the genesis of his life's work against the backdrop of a nation undergoing significant political, social, and artistic shifts. Ultimately, this book is a meditation on the power of memory and the deep impressions left by place and time in the life of an artist.
