This book has been written with a double purpose: first, to present Mozart sprincipal operas as still living works to modern audiences; and, secondly, to draw from them illustrations of certain points of view from which music in general and opera in particular may be considered. These ideas have in the present work received no more than a summary indication, and I hope later on to find an opportunity of treating them more in detail. The first chapter deals mainly with principles of musical appreciation. Chapter II gives a survey of Mozart searly operas and his relation to his century, after which the more important operas are discussed at greater length. I have been careful in each case to give an account of the plot in as concise a form as possible. Quotations of music fromM ozart soperas have as a rule been avoided, since cheap editions are easily available, but an exception has been made in favour of I domeneo, since that work is comparatively little known, even toM ozart enthusiasts. On the other hand, a number of examples have been given from the works of Mozart scontemporaries, which are for the most part extant only in manuscript or in early printed editions.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines Mozart's principal operas within the broader context of 18th-century Italian opera. The author delves into the historical significance of this influential genre and traces its evolution, demonstrating how the operatic aria played a key role in shaping the structure and development of instrumental music during the period. The author explores the specific influences that shaped Mozart's musical style, including the galant style, the polyphonic tradition, and the symphonic conventions of the day, and discusses how he synthesized these diverse influences into his own unique voice. By contrasting Mozart's operas with the work of his contemporaries, the author reveals how Mozartââ â¢s genius transcended the prevailing trends of the time, ultimately pushing the boundaries of musical expression and creating a legacy that continues to inspire audiences today.
