9781330286333: Elementary Physical Geography (Classic Reprint)

Synopsis

Explore how mountains shape climates, travel, and life on Earth. This concise guide presents mountains not just as tall features, but as active forces in weather, water, and human movement. It uses clear, concrete explanations suited for early learners, with careful notes on where simple answers aren’t possible.

This book explains how land forms like mountains are formed, how their shapes relate to climate and rainfall, and why ranges act as barriers to people and animals. It highlights the differences between windward and leeward sides, passes, and the ways people build roads and railways through rugged terrain. The text often describes rather than over-simplifies, balancing direct observation with the limits of elementary explanation.

  • How mountains influence climate, rainfall, and river sources.

  • Why passes and notches matter for travel and how roads are engineered for safety.

  • Natural hazards like avalanches and landslides, and how communities respond.

  • How mountains affect where people live and how settlements develop around valleys and coasts.

Ideal for readers curious about physical geography, classrooms, and anyone seeking a practical overview of mountain environments.

Présentation de l'éditeur

The educational progress of recent years has resulted in two profitable advances for the venerable subject of Geography. A strong feeling has been developed in favor of treating the subject as a whole more rationally than heretofore, and a wholesome desire has arisen in favor of introducing some of its scientific aspects more generally into the school course. A natural accompaniment of this progress has been a demand for text-books that shall present Physical Geography in its modern scientific development as well as in an elementary form. The present book, reduced from the authors Physical Geography, has been prepared to meet this demand. The reduction of the earlier book to the present volume has been made chiefly by omitting the more advanced problems and by simplifying and abbreviating the treatment of the remainder; but the chapter on The Atmosphere is here given a greater length than before; and a new chapter is added on The Distribution of Plants, A nimals, and Man, considered from a physiographic standpoirit. Several topics of a somewhat more advanced nature than the rest of the text, and yet of too great importance to be omitted altogether, are placed in supplements to Chapters I, II, and III.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
