Présentation de l'éditeur

This book has been written for a very practical purpose, namely, to present in simple and intelligible form a body of geometric doctrine, acquaintance with which may fairly be demanded of candidates for the Freshman class, and is in fact demanded at this University of theS tate of Missouri. This purpose has regulated both the amount and the character of the matter introduced. The former might have been made larger, the latter more uniform and scientific, but only so at least it seemed to the author at a sacrifice of usefulness under existing conditions. Much more than one years study can hardly be given toP lane Geometry in the majority of High Schools and Academies a fact that sets rather narrow limits to practicable treatment of the subject. In such a course the Apollonian problem would seem to present itself as a natural and rightful goal. Besides, in its solution the logical play, while direct and simple, is yet highly instructive and even artistic, all the concepts of the foregoing sections are summoned up and marshalled and brought to bear upon a single point. But if any such goal is to be attained in such a time, the path pursued must not be tortuous, and there will be little leisure for lateral excursions.
