Synopsis

Master the tools and methods used in engineering experiments and testing. This classic manual offers a practical, fully explained guide to the instruments and procedures engineers use to collect data, measure performance, and evaluate materials and equipment. It emphasizes calculating accuracy, calibrating instruments, and understanding how to obtain reliable results in real-world testing.

This edition surveys a broad range of topics, from measurement and recording devices to heat, flow, power, and fuel analysis. It combines theory with hands-on guidance, illustrations, and procedure notes so readers can apply the methods in laboratories, ships, or field settings. The content is suitable for students, technicians, and professionals working in mechanical and naval engineering.

- Learn how to choose and use instruments for computing and recording experimental data.
- Understand measurement errors, accuracy, and best practices for calibration.
- Explore calorimeters, gages, thermometers, dynamos, torsion meters, and flow meters.
- See how to analyze steam, water, fuel oils, and flue gases for performance and efficiency.

Ideal for readers of technical manuals in engineering labs, naval engineering, and applied physics, this book helps you translate experiments into reliable results.

Présentation de l'éditeur

In attempting to revise the volume of Notes onE xperimental Engineering compiled by the author in 1907, so much new matter was at hand and so many changes were found necessary that it was deemed advisable to rewrite the whole book. In doing this considerable matter belonging properly to the subject of experimental engineering has been brought in from other text-books. The following authorities have been consulted: Carpenter sE xperimental Engineering; Experimental Engineering, by Pullen and Popplewell; Physical Laboratory Notes, byS ilas W. Holman; Barton sI nternal Combustion Engines; Bieg sT ext-B ook on Naval Boilers; Departmental Notes; Smart sL aboratory Practice; Practical Cement Testing, by Taylor; Journal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Journal of the American Society of Naval Engineers; Power and theE ngineer; various manufacturers pamphlets. The notes on the temperature-entropy diagram have, for the most part, been taken from the article on that subject by Lieutenant-C ommander L. M. Nulton, U. S. N., published in the Journal American Society of Naval Engineers, Vol. VIII. The matter relating to time-firing devices has been supplied by Commander S. S. Eobison, U. S. N., of theB ureau of Steam Engineering. My thanks are due toM r. F. H. Rittenour, draftsman in theD epartment of Marine Engineering and Naval Construction, for much valuable assistance in the preparation of the illustrations and toM r. J. M. Armstrong for assistance in photographing apparatus. Also to the several manufacturers of engineering apparatus for their courtesy in supplying cuts of their laboratory appliances. U. T. HOLMES, Commander, U. S. N. BUREAU OF STEAM ENGINEERING, NAVY DEPARTMENT, May,
