Présentation de l'éditeur

In the following treatise on mechanics and heat an effort has been made to present the subject in as clear a manner as possible for use of a college student. A knowledge of plane trigonometry is necessary before undertaking this study, and the more mathematics a student knows the better he will ordinarily succeed in physics. Some changes have been made in the form of the usual college text and in the method of presentation. The aim of the writer has constantly been to say the words that would help the student to understand the subject. Thus it is hoped that the book will prove to be not only a treatise but also a text-book for students. Reference matter and tables are placed in the appendix instead of being scattered through the text. This takes less room and is much more convenient for reference. A number of short lists of problems are found where they are needed to illustrate the application of principles learned. Answers to problems are given at the end of the lists, but a student should be made to understand that numerical results are not so important here as his ability to present the line of argument involved in the problem. The tables of sines, cosines, tangents, etc., are intended to make the book more desirable as a complete working text.
