A heartfelt guide to birds, their world, and our responsibility to protect them.
This nonfiction work blends vivid observations of birds with warm, practical reflections on how they fit into our country life. The author writes from a lifelong love of the countryside, sharing how birds enrich every walk, hedge, and meadow, and why their future matters to us all. With clear, accessible prose, the book pairs intimate scenes of feathered neighbors with a call to protect them from cruel traps and careless habitat loss.

Nineteenth Century, during the years 1902-1904; and I wish to thank the editor, Sir James Knowles, for his kind permission to reprint them after a shorter interval than is usual. They have all been carefully revised, and have, in many places, been recast and received large additions. Of the other chapters, one, that upon The Wild Duck, was published, many years ago, in Baileys Magazine. The account of theS horteared Owl appeared, as recently as August last, in the shape of a separate article in theO utlook, and it was followed up in October by a second article in the same paper, on the birds of Norfolk. To the editors both of Baileys Magazine and theO utlook, I have to return my grateful acknowledgments for the leave which they have given me to reproduce them.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
