Excerpt from The Psychology of Advertising
Previous to the appearance of this article (march, 1901) there had been no attempt to present psychol ogy to the business world in a usable form. As far as the advertiser could see all psychologies were writ ten with a purely theoretical end in view. They con tained a vast amount of technical material devoid of interest to the layman who struggled through the pages. This condition made it quite difficult for the business man to extract that part of the subject which was of value to him.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the burgeoning field of advertising psychology, a subject of great interest to the progressive American businessman of the early 20th century. The author, recognizing the limitations of traditional advertising practices, proposes a more scientific approach, arguing that advertising success hinges on understanding the intricacies of the human mind. He explores the power of memory, emphasizing the importance of repetition, intensity, association, and ingenuity in crafting memorable advertisements. The author then examines the significance of appealing to the customer's feelings and emotions, especially through the power of sympathy. The book explores concepts of beauty and how the principles of symmetry and proportion can be applied to visually pleasing advertisements. Through numerous examples of existing advertisements, the author illustrates how these psychological principles can be effectively implemented in practical advertising campaigns. Ultimately, this book provides a foundational framework for understanding how the principles of psychology can be harnessed to create compelling and effective advertising.
