Emerging from the philosophies of Hume and Hutcheson, this line of thought was radical in its day for applying Enlightenment ideas to social and political reform. However, by 1840 the movement's one-sidedness and inability to understand the needs of the working class resulted in a decline. Yet, the book shows how the movement's economic ideas persisted in the work of Cobden and the Manchester School and how John Stuart Mill's later writings foreshadowed modern socialist and social democratic thought.
