Master the essentials of algebra with a classic, time-tested text that has guided generations of students.
This edition presents a clear, well-structured journey through core topics, from ratios and proportions to advanced chapters on determinants, equations, and permutations. It emphasizes accessible explanations and a wide range of examples to build confidence and fluency in problem solving.
Originally revised and expanded to improve readability and usefulness for both study and teaching, the book balances foundational concepts with practical applications. It includes new sections introduced for clarity, along with a substantial collection of problems to reinforce understanding and prepare readers for coursework and examinations.
Ideal for students seeking a solid foundation in algebra, as well as teachers and self-learners looking for a durable, reliable reference.

The present work is intended as a sequel to our Elementary Algebra forS chools. The first few chapters are devoted to a fuller discussion of Ratio, Proportion, Variation, and the Progressions, which in the former work were treated in an elementary manner; and we have here introduced theorems and examples which are unsuitable for a first course of reading. From this point the work covers ground for the most part new to the student, and enters upon subjects of special importance: these we have endeavoured to treat minutely and thoroughly, discussing both bookwork and examples witli that fulness which we have always found necessary in our experience as teachers. It has been our aim to discuss all the essential parts as completely as possible within the limits of a single volume, but in a few of the later chapters it has been impossible to find room for more than an introductory sketch ;in all such cases our object has been to map out a suitable first course of reading, referring the student to special treatises for fuller information. In the chapter on Permutations and Combinations we are much indebted to the Rev. W. A. Whitworth for permission to make use of some of the proofs given in his Choice and Chance.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
