Explore the science of heredity and how traits pass through generations, with practical ideas about how environment, use, and age influence evolution. This edition dives into how intellectual power, physical traits, and even famous lineages may reflect natural laws at work.
Structured to guide curious readers through key ideas, the book blends historical examples with a discussion of theories about inheritance, variation, and evolution. It emphasizes how careful study of birth patterns, family lines, and the timing of reproduction can illuminate the paths of human and animal development.
Ideal for readers interested in the history of genetics, evolutionary ideas, and the science behind heredity in both people and animals.

Travelers tell us that monkeys will watch men around a camp fire, and that as soon as the men leave, the monkeys will occupy their places, warming themselves till the fire goes out. The monkeys can appreciate the warmth coming from the fire, but they do not know enough to keep it up by piling on more wood. Much less do they know how to start a fire when they want it. If we should assume these monkeys sitting around a fire and engaged in evolving a theory of combustion, we would have a parallel to those biologists who are engaged in trying to give us a chemical formula for heredity without having the least idea of how to manipulate the forces of evolution so as to originate any desired line of development, or to maintain it for succeeding generations when the advantageous variation has been originated by accident. Knowledge that carbon unites with oxygen in certain definite proportions during combustion is both interesting and useful, but its usefulness is secondary to the usefulness of knowing how to build a fire when wanted, and to maintain and control it when it is built. Selection has been an instrument by which breeders have, in a few generations, vastly improved our domestic animals, but confessedly selection, as applied to the lower animals, is not applicable to civilized man. In the preparation of the following pages it has been my object to provide a simple and practical process of lighting and controlling the fires of evolution, particularly in their application to man.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the role heredity plays in passing on a variety of characteristics, both physical and mental, from parents to children. The author challenges the commonly held view that certain capabilities, such as intelligence and talent, are solely the result of "good" breeding or happenstance. In fact, through examination of historical events, scientific research, and case studies, the author argues that genetics is just as significant, if not more so, than environment in shaping who we are. Marshaling examples from animal breeding and human history, the author builds a case for the importance of heredity, demonstrating why it is essential for a deeper understanding of society, medicine, and our own biology. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
