General Friedrich von Bernhardi's military strategy guide 'On War of the Future' (1920) was a seminal German military doctrine on the strategy, theory, and practice of modern warfare. It significantly influenced German military thought in the interwar years, particularly in the development of the 'Blitzkrieg' strategy adopted by the Wehrmacht during World War II. Bernhardi's premise was that the advent of mass armies and trench warfare had revolutionized war. Germany had to adapt to these new conditions and be prepared to engage in a future 'war of annihilation' for which there could be no rules and in which the only objective was to destroy the enemy. His theories were controversial and stoked fears of German aggression in the years leading up to World War II, but they also helped lay the groundwork for modern military strategy and continue to be studied by military theorists and historians today.
