Exploring the impact of repeated tension, compression and alternating tension-compression cycles on riveted joints, this book reveals that significant joint slippage and rivet bending can occur under ordinary working loads. The authors further observed that the extent of this movement increased as the load exceeded the yield point. The authors conclude that while slip must be expected under ordinary working stresses, it is futile to design riveted joints with zero slippage.
