This book gives an historical, and intellectual analysis of the philosophical, social and theological examination of the complex relationship between religion and morality, with special reference to Christianity where the author finds the purest and most valuable elements of religion in their fullest development. The author Otto Pfleiderer, a distinguished German thinker positions the subject within the broader historical context from the reformation debates through to the enlightenment's skepticism and beyond emphasizing the author's position that there is a fundamental connection between religious and moral ideas. Pfleiderer argues that the essence of religion lies in the rational human consciousness of God, and that this consciousness necessarily leads to a feeling of dependence on, and reverence for, a higher power. This feeling of dependence, in turn, gives rise to a sense of morality, as humans recognise their obligation to obey the divine will. The book traces the development of this idea in the history of religion, from its early beginnings in primitive animism to its full development in Christianity. It also examines the relationship between religion and morality in modern society, arguing that, while the two are distinct spheres, they are nevertheless closely connected, and that a healthy and flourishing society cannot exist without both.
