Revealing a dark page of colonial history and its human cost
This nonfiction account examines the administration of British India in the 18th century, exposing how revenue systems, monopolies, and local governance shaped poverty and suffering. Through contemporary testimony and critical analysis, it argues that policy and profit collided to produce famine, dislocation, and oppression for the native population.
In vivid detail, the narrative points to practices that enriched officials while leaving communities vulnerable to famine, disease, and social disruption. It highlights specific examples from Bengal and Backergunge to illustrate how confiscations, forced trade, and punitive measures affected everyday life and commerce.Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.
Excerpt from Colonization and Christianity: A Popular History of the Treatment of the Natives by the Europeans in All Their Colonies
The object of this volume is to lay open to the public the most extensive and extraordinary system of crime which the world ever witnessed. It is a system which has been in full operation for more than three hundred years, and continues yet in unabating activity of evil. The apathy which has hitherto existed in England upon this subject has proceeded in a great measure from want of knowledge. National injustice towards particular tribes, or particular individuals, has excited the most lively feeling, and the most energetic exertions for its redress, - but the whole wide field of unchristian operations in which this country, more than any other, is engaged, has never yet been laid in a clear and comprehensive view before the public mind. It is no part of the present volume to suggest particular plans of remedy. The first business is to make known the nature and the extent of the evil, - that once perceived, in this great country there will not want either heads to plan or hands to accomplish all that is due to the rights of others, or the honour and interest of England.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a dark and often overlooked chapter of history: the treatment of indigenous populations by European colonizers in the wake of the Age of Discovery. The author exposes the hypocrisy of European nations who, while claiming to be Christian, embraced a brutal and exploitative system of colonial rule. He argues that the European model of Christianity was corrupted from its inception by the Catholic Church, which prioritized power and wealth over the true teachings of Jesus. The author uses the example of Columbusââ â¢s voyages and the subsequent Spanish conquest of the Americas to illustrate the barbarity and avarice that characterized colonial ventures. The book is a powerful indictment of the hypocrisy of European colonialism, and a stark reminder of the need for genuine Christian compassion in our dealings with others. The authorââ â¢s insights offer a valuable perspective on the complex legacy of colonialism and the continuing need to confront the injustices it perpetuated.
