The following pages appeared in their original form as a doctorate thesis offered to and accepted by the authorities of Harvard University in 1899. As will be seen, I have tried to prove that the epic theme of a combat between father and son has its origin in certain primitive customs. I do not believe that it can be traced back to any one place; though in saying this, I do not wish to assert that there has been no travelling, and that each variant stands by itself. I do think that in many parts of the world conditions have been favourable for the birth of the tale, so that a number of variants are in all likelihood of independent origin. When they once appear they may wander indefinitely and affect each other, but this side of the question I have not thought necessary to discuss. The variants offered range from the folktale to the episode in a very artificial romance. Naturally it is upon the former that I have based my theories, and I hope that in the body of the work I have made clear my opinion as to their relative importance.
