Synopsis

A window into the origins of osteopathy and its practical classroom work .

Explore how the early American School of Osteopathy trained students, treated patients, and framed a medical philosophy that guided hands-on healing. This edition gathers passages that show the clinic as a learning ground and the infirmary as a real-world laboratory. It reveals how students observe and practice under expert supervision, how treatments were organized, and how the profession framed its approach to diseases and the body as a connected system. Readers get a sense of the era, the ambitions, and the everyday work behind the growth of osteopathy.

  • How clinics pair student learning with actual patient cases.
  • The role of the infirmary, treatment fees, and student restrictions in hands-on care.
  • Profiles of practitioners and the emphasis on practical demonstrations of principles.
  • Descriptions of the curriculum, including anatomy, surgery, and the school’s teaching methods.
Ideal for readers curious about the historical development of osteopathy and the practical, patient-centered approach that shaped its early days.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Considered a groundbreaking medical discovery at the time Osteopathy is still a respected profession and is on the border between conventional and complementary medicine. In this book the founder of Osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still, lays out the philosophies behind the art. Ahead of his time in such areas as belief in preventative care and disgust at the occasionally horrific side effects of the then-practices of conventional medicine AT Still decided (as in other areas of his life) to improve things rather than complain.

Still was an interesting individual, prone to inventing his way around problems. He was also a doctor, author, surgeon, lawmaker and founder of a university.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Many of my friends have been anxious ever since Osteopathy became an established fact, that I should write a treatise on the science. But I was never convinced that the time was ripe for such a production, nor am I even now convinced that this is not a little premature. Osteopathy is only in its infancy, it is a great unknown sea just discovered, and as yet we are only acquainted with its shore-tide.
