In the course of a furlough I took in the year 1870 to theM adras sanatarium of Utacamand, mthe Nilagiri mountains I heard much of an aboriginal race living in the neighbourhood ;which, infanticidal and polyandrous, was said to be fast dying out. I had long been curious to understand the mysterious process by which, as appears inevitable, savage tribes melt away when forced into prolonged contact with a ,superior civilisation. But, ignorant of all the languages i of South I ndia, I should have relinquished attempt to study the Todas, had I not the great good fortune to make the acquaintance of the Reverend Friedrich Metz, of theB asel Missionary Society, who had spent upwards of twenty years in labours amongst the primitive tribes forming the inhabitants of theN ilagiris ;and who, in addition to being skilled in several Dravidian dialects, was exceptionally practised inH igh Kanarese and Tamil. A bove all, he was the only European able to speak the obscure Toda tongue. Mr Metz most readily agreed to co-operate with me in strict enquiry into the condition of the Todas, and IC ommonly called Ootacamund, in theN ilgherry hills ;it being the necuU annglo-I ndian custom to style all mountams, hdls Thus theE alayas ieonly hills, whilst in England, Ben Nevis andS nowdon are mountains.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the enigmatic world of the Toda tribe, an isolated and primitive people residing on the Nilagiri Mountains of India. The author, a British phrenologist, spent years studying the Toda's customs, beliefs, and physical characteristics. Through detailed observations and analysis of their skull shapes, the author unravels the tribe's origins and cultural evolution, tracing their history from a nomadic existence to their current pastoral lifestyle. The book offers a unique perspective on the Toda's social and religious practices, including their peculiar marriage customs, elaborate funeral rites, and belief in a divine cattle-bell. By examining the interconnections between the Toda's physical attributes and their cultural practices, the author provides valuable insights into the development of human behavior and the origins of early religious concepts.
