Excerpt from Life: Its Nature, Origin and Maintenance, an Address Delivered to the British Association for the Advancement of Science, at Its Meeting at Dundee in September, 1912
IN the following Essay, which formed the Presidential Address to the British Association at its meeting this year in Dundee, I have tried to indicate in clear language the general trend of modern bio-chemical inquiries regarding the nature and origin of living material and the manner in which the life of multicellular organisms, especially that of the higher animals and man, is maintained. I have also stated the conclusions which it appears to me may legitimately be drawn from the result of those inquiries, without ignoring or minimising such diffities as these conclusions present.

Drawing on the latest advances in biochemistry, the author explores the fundamental principles that govern living organisms, from the smallest molecules to the most complex biological systems. The author traces the historical development of scientific understanding of life, from the early theories of spontaneous generation to the modern era of molecular biology. The book delves into the chemical composition and physical properties of living matter, examining the role of proteins, nucleic acids, and other molecules in cellular function. It also considers the complex interactions between cells and their environment, and the processes of growth, reproduction, and evolution. This book is a valuable resource for students, researchers, and anyone interested in the fundamental questions of life's origins and the nature of living systems.
