Synopsis

Delve into the science of polyphase currents and alternating current motors with a classic work that combines theory and practical insight. This edition presents the core concepts behind rotatory magnetic fields, phase relationships, and the operation of polyphase systems, supported by clear diagrams and step-by-step reasoning.

With accessible explanations, the book connects foundational ideas to real-world machine behavior, covering starting torque, efficiency considerations, and how phase and slip influence motor performance. It builds a cohesive picture of how polyphase systems generate and control rotating fields, making complex topics approachable for students and professionals alike.

  • Foundational theory of rotatory magnetic fields and phase relationships

  • How slip, torque, and efficiency relate in polyphase motors

  • Practical discussion of starting torque and motor design considerations

  • Illustrative diagrams and methodical development of the subject

Ideal for readers seeking a solid, historically grounded introduction to polyphase electric currents and their motors.

Excerpt from Polyphase Electric Currents and Alternate-Current Motors

No apology is needed for devoting special attention at the present time to the subject of polyphase electric currents. There seems to be no doubt that in the problem of the electric transmission of power a very important part will, in the future, be played by alternating currents combined in systems of two or three different phases. Already a number of examples exist; and some very large works are now in course of construction. The undoubted advantages possessed by polyphase systems over either (a) continuous current systems, or (¿) ordinary single phase alternate currents, for the special service of power transmission, are beyond question; but it remains to be seen how far the complications thereby inevitably introduced are, in practice, sufficiently great to militate against polyphase distribution for the purpose of general electric lighting supplies.
