Essays, two those on Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and onE dward FitzG erald first appeared in 11 The Quarterly Review ;one that on Gray in Murray sM agazine ;the study of Cowper in Macmillan sM agazine ;and that of Gibbon in the Fortnightly Review. A few slight alterations and corrections have been made in reprinting them. With these exceptions, they are republished in their original form ;and, for permission to do this, I am indebted, in the several cases, to the courtesy of Mr. Murray, Messrs. Macmillan Co., and Messrs. Chapman Hall, which I take this opportunity of acknowledging. The Essays onS wift, Johnson, and Lamb appear now for the first time.
