This book has been written with the object of placing in a concise manner, before engineers and students, the thermodynamic principles underlying the design of various forms of heat engines. With this object in view, no detailed description of the mechanisms of the various types referred to has been attempted except in so far as has been necessary, to explain the theoretical principles involved. To render the book of more use to students, a number of examples have been added as an A ppendix. The calculation of heat quantities by means of the temperature-entropy diagram has been purposely avoided throughout, as it has been thought better, for the sake of uniformity, to treat every type from the pressure-volume point of view only. I desire to take this opportunity of acknowledging my indebtedness toP rofessor S.
