Unravel the threads of Europe's past through the science of skulls, tongues, and travel across centuries.
This scholarly work surveys how ancient peoples—Phoenicians, Greeks, Gauls, Romans, and many others—shaped the physical and cultural landscape of Europe. It examines the rise and mixing of populations, the evidence behind the Aryan question, and how environment, diet, and migration have influenced faces, stature, and skull shapes from the Alps to the Baltic. Written to illuminate both the mysteries and limits of early anthropological methods, the book invites readers to weigh ideas about race, history, and identity against the facts of material culture and geography.
- Learn how early scholars linked language, territory, and body form to explain Europe’s peoples.
- Understand different skull types, measurements, and what they may or may not reveal about ancestry.
- See how regional histories—from Scandinavia to the Balkans, from Switzerland to the British Isles—shape our view of “types.”
- Consider the role of climate, conquest, and cultural exchange in molding populations over time.
Ideal for readers of history, anthropology, and curious non-specialists who want a careful, debated look at Europe’s racial and cultural formation.

Excerpt from The Anthropological History of Europe
This new edition of The Anthropological History of Europe seems to be called for not only by the exhaustion of the earlier one, but by the lapse of time (twenty years) since the delivery of the Rhind Lectures of 1891, during which period the limits of what may fairly be termed history have been pushed back in some parts of Europe by hundreds or even thousands of years, and the views I originally expressed on some parts of the subject have either been confirmed or rendered more problematical. I have endeavoured therefore to bring the volume up to date, but have avoided entering on the discussion of such subjects as pygmies and steatopygous men in Europe, of which we as yet know little, and which must as yet be excluded from the domain of history.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
