To meet the wants of this class of students, great care has been taken to avoid superfluous matter; the definitions have been revised and abbreviated; the demonstrations have been simplified and condensed; the rules and principles have been illustrated and enforced by numerous examples, so chosen as to familiarize the student with the use of radical and transcendental quantities; and finally, the manner of applying the Calculus has been exemplified by the solution of a variety of problems in Mechanics and A stronomy. The method employed in developing the principles of the science is essentially that of Leibnitz.
