Calculus and its A pplications, as now taught inC olumbia College. This course being purely optional, is selected by those only who have a taste for mathematical studies, and it is pursued by them more with reference to its utility than as a means of mental discipline. These circumstances have given to the present work a practical character that can hardly fail to commend it to those who study the Calculus for the advantages it gives them in the solution of scientific problems. To meet the wants of this class of students, great care has been taken to avoid superfluous matter; the definitions have been revised and abbreviated; the demonstrations have been simplified and condensed; the rules and principles have been illustrated and enforced by numerous examples, so chosen as to familiarize the student with the use of radical and transcendental quantities; and finally, the manner of applying the Calculus has been exemplified by the solution of a variety of problems in Mechanics and A stronomy. The method employed in developing the principles of the science is essentially that of Leibnitz.
