A practical, beginner-friendly Latin course designed for real classroom use. The Beginner's Latin Book introduces Latin through carefully chosen vocabulary drawn from traditional sources and a focus on practical form and reading skills. This edition aims to guide learners smoothly from basics to meaningful Latin passages, with an emphasis on usefulness over pure grammar drills.
Centered on a light, flexible progression, the book pairs noun and verb work with graded reading lessons. About three-fifths of the readings pull from Caesar, with fables and a Latin version of the Labors of Hercules to build vocabulary and confidence. The approach favors approachable, active practice and practical word formation, ending with connected English passages for translation into Latin.
Ideal for students beginning Latin, and for teachers seeking a clear, traditional path into Latin literature and grammar.

This book is different in some essential points from every other designed for beginners now in use in our schools. This fact gives the reason for its existence. I ts vocabulary is made up largely of words common to Caesar, Nepos, and the Viri Romae, and has been selected with great care from those found most frequently in these sources. The noun and verb have been treated for the most part in alternating lessons. Their forms have been analyzed in such a manner as to give practical guidance to the pupil, without any effort on our part to trace in such analysis the historical development of the words, even where exact knowledge in this line is possible. Verb and noun exercises as mere form drill have been suggested, rather than given in set exercises. Carefully graded reading lessons, fifty in number, are an important feature of the book. A bout three fifths of these are based on Caesar, about one fifth consists of fables, and the rest of a Latin version of theL abors of Hercules. These are led up to gradually in vocabulary and exercises in such a way as to smooth the path of the pupil, and at the same time leave difficulties sufficient to compel mental exertion on his part. Word formation has been treated in a simple and suggestive way, and made practical by brief exercises running through the latter half of the book.

About the Publisher
Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.
Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. Careful attention has been made to accurately preserve the original format of each page whilst digitally enhancing the aged text.
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
