The author, well versed in the subject, delves into the complexities of the region's politics and culture. The book argues that rather than being inherently backward, Egypt under the Muhammad Ali dynasty sought progress and reform, introducing many legislative changes and implementing a broad program of modernization and Westernization. However, interference from European powers, especially in regard to the Suez Canal project, caused a financial crisis which gave them a pretext to intervene in Egypt's affairs and neutralize its position as a significant international player. Ultimately, this book sheds light on the oppressive and exploitative policies of the European powers which contributed to Egypt's political and economic instability during this period.
