This is a book of war. It deals with a form of warfare in which America excels. The struggles of our engineers against overwhelming forces of nature, their daring ventures, and magnificent achievements, are as full of live interest as any story of battle between man and man. The author has endeavored to set down some of the more unusual exploits of American engineers in such a way as to appeal to a boy and to satisfy his natural craving for adventure, while, at the same time, teaching him some of the elements of civil engineering. This has called for a combination of fact and fiction. However, all the adventures recounted are actually based on fact, although they have been altered and modified to fit the special requirements of the narrative. But no liberties have been taken with engineering data.
