Synopsis

This book takes readers on a historical journey through the rise and fall of trade empires during the Middle Ages. It explores the complex relationship between commerce, discovery, and invention, arguing that each advancement in one area propelled progress in the others. The author traces the shift of global trade centers from the inland seas of antiquity to European control of the Atlantic during the Age of Exploration. Key topics include the influence of trade routes on the prosperity of cities such as Venice, Genoa, and the Hanseatic League, and the impact of the Ottoman Empire's rise and the Portuguese discovery of the Cape of Good Hope on traditional trade routes. Ultimately, this work provides a comprehensive overview of the forces that shaped the development of global trade, offering valuable insights into the historical foundations of the modern economy.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Mr. Benham made a catalogue of my collection of engravings, mezzotints and woodcuts, of Merchants, Bankers andF inanciers of former times, and in writing the biographies of these men, he made the subject of Commerce in the period prior to the American War of Independence so interesting, that I asked him to prepare a paper on Commerce from the early days of history to about the end of theE ighteenth Century. The task was a difficult one, but Mr. Benham has handled the subject so well that I have had his sketch printed in the belief that others will enjoy reading it. It is also a pleasure for me to reproduce therewith a few prints from my collection. The catalogue proper is not included in this volume but is printed separately inasmuch as it is interesting only to collectors.
