Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a survey of the architectural wonders of the city of Rome, from its earliest times to the decline of the western empire. The author attempts to trace the rise, progress, and decline of the city, as well as the vicissitudes of her monuments. He uses some of the more striking historical scenes as illustrations, and alludes to the lives and residences of those whose genius has adorned or whose actions have illustrated their history. This is, to the author's knowledge, the first history of Rome in the English language, and he hopes that this circumstance will be a recommendation to his readers. Some of the conclusions generally accepted by scholars are re-examined and objections to them are noted. If the author is wrong, the refutation of these objections will only serve to establish more firmly the results of modern criticism. The main goal of the author is to discover the truth, and if he is mistaken, he will cheerfully accept any corrections that may prove him so.
