Synopsis

Explore a frontier of Africa through the eyes of a seasoned hunter as the veldt comes alive with predators, peril, and breathtaking scenery.

Travel and Big Game offers a vivid travelogue of late 19th‑century Africa, blending practical hunting notes with striking scenery. The narrative follows treks along riverbanks and across salt plains, detailing encounters with lions, buffalo, and other iconic wildlife, set against vast landscapes and changing dangers.

Readers encounter long days in thick brush, close calls, and the rhythm of a hunter’s life—from tracking spoor to the moment of a shot, and the slow process of skinning and sharing the campfire stories that follow. The prose captures weather, terrain, and the constant balance between skill, caution, and respect for the wild.

  • Descriptive scenes of the African veld, rivers, and a changing landscape.

  • First‑hand hunting chapters featuring lion and buffalo encounters and strategies.

  • Notes on gear, calibers, and the practical realities of a big‑game safari.

  • Personal anecdotes about camp life, companionship, and the risks of pursuit in remote areas.

Ideal for readers who enjoy rugged travel writing, wildlife encounters, and historical safari narratives.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Am ocean passage now-a-days is humdrum, compared to what it was twenty-five years ago; but even then, it was not every voyage which was marked with such incidents as was that of K.M.S.S., theN eva, in which vessel I was bound forB uenos Ayres en route for theB anda Orientale. We were at anchor atS t. Vincent, Cape Verdes, watching the boys diving for coin, when the fin of a big shark, attracted by the offal thrown overboard by the butcher, was discerned coming in from the open water. A. general sauve-qui-jjetft among the swimmers took place and the shark came right up to within a stones throw of the ship. It having transpired that there was a man on shore who had had some experience in whaling, and had the paraphernalia therefor, a deputation from among the passengers set out to try and induce him to harpoon the fish.
