In 1913, according to the United States census statistics, over seven thousand persons lost their lives through accidental drowning. It is a strange fact that many who are daily exposed to danger from drowning do not know how to swim. This is true of lumbermen, of men in the navy, of many who are members of crews on ships and boats. It is not underestimating the facts to say that fully twenty-five percent of all young men and boys in the United States over twelve years of age do not know how to swim, and the percentage is, of course, much larger when applied to both sexes and to all ages. Every one should know how to swim, for at least three reasons: It is a splendid form of exercise, judged from the standpoint of physiology, resulting in improved health accompanied by ease and grace of carriage; it imparts selfreliance and courage, which become elements in ones character, increasing ones power both for good and against evil; and finally it may prove the means of saving life.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book instructs the reader on the art of swimming through both text and visual illustrations. It is written from the author's extensive personal experience teaching swimming, a vocation he fell into almost by accident and stayed with due to seeing the wonderful results it had on his pupils. The author provides a solid overview of the context of swimming as an athletic activity, in particular the social benefits for young people, and emphasizes key aspects, including proper breathing rhythm, body position, and the correct techniques. The author also covers techniques suitable for those whose mobility is reduced and how swimming can help those people regain strength and mobility. The reader will learn how to approach water with confidence, and how to use it for recreation and fitness or in a life saving situation.
