I think it is often a pity to collect and republish contributions to periodical literature, and authors are apt to feel too tenderly, with a sort of fatherly regard, about the little cr0ps of their own minds. Articles written for journals are apt, of course, to be topical and occasional things, composed very often, by the necessity of the case, rapidly and hurriedly, on some momentary subject. They are then little more than improations, spun out of impromptu materials, and there has been no time for them to take shape in the writer's mind.
