Explore the theory and practical design of alternating currents, from basic electromotive forces to complex electrical machines.
This book presents a clear path from foundational ideas to applied engineering. It covers how alternating current is generated, measured, and controlled, with a steady progression from simple concepts to the operation of real devices like alternators, transformers, and induction motors. It also explains how measurement, synchronization, and protection systems fit into everyday electrical practice.
- Learn how movement of a conductor in a magnetic field creates an electromotive force and current.
- See how frequency, phase, and three-phase systems shape power delivery and machine performance.
- Understand the construction, operation, and control of alternators, transformers, and induction motors.
- Discover practical approaches to switching, protection, and synchronization in electrical networks.
Ideal for students, technicians, engineers, and professionals who want a solid, work‑level understanding of alternating currents and their machines.

Principles of Alternating Currents, the writer has on many occasions, when recommending a text book to students, found a difficulty in selecting one which, while giving a sufficiently full account of the laws governing the flow of alternating currents in circuits, also includes an account of the several types of alternating current machines. It is hoped that the present book will fill the gap, since, while the fundamental principles of the alternating current circuit are adequately considered, sufficient matter concerning machines and appliances is given to enable readers who have worked through the book to proceed at once to a specialised study of the particular machine or appliance in which they are more immediately interested. Many students, in fact the majority, desire to take up the study of alternating currents with a very inadequate knowledge of mathematics. In view of this fact, which is to be greatly regretted and which constitutes one of the greatest difficulties of students and teachers alike, the calculus has not been used in the body of the book; it has, however, been used in a few footnotes, mainly with the idea of showing students what excellent examples of the use of elementary calculus are furnished by the subject under consideration.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fundamental principles of alternating currents, a topic crucial to understanding the operation of electrical machinery, power systems, and many modern electronic devices. The author provides a comprehensive treatment of the subject, encompassing inductance, the flow of alternating currents in circuits with resistance, inductance, and capacitance, as well as the behavior of these circuits under varying conditions. The book also explores the concepts of power in alternating current circuits, the fundamentals of polyphase currents, and the principles of alternating current machinery. The author's approach balances theoretical rigor with practical applications, making this book a valuable resource for students, practicing engineers, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of alternating currents and their significance in shaping our electrical world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
