Synopsis

Master hands-on physics with a classic lab companion that guides you through real experiments and careful measurement. This edition of Advanced Exercises in Practical Physics brings together a practical, lab-tested approach to learning through observation, experimentation, and interpretation. It emphasizes using common laboratory equipment, adapting to small differences in apparatus, and applying measurement theory to improve accuracy and understanding.

The book covers a wide range of subjects across core physics fields, from the preliminary study of errors in observation to detailed experiments in mechanics, heat, sound, light, and magnetism and electricity. It places a strong focus on how to set up and run experiments, how to record observations, and how to interpret results without overreliance on perfect instruments. The material is organized to help students develop both practical skills and a solid grasp of the underlying principles.

What you’ll experience
- Practical guidance on building and using equipment that’s typical in most laboratories, with notes on acceptable variations.
- How to think about measurement error, data grouping, and probability to judge the reliability of results.
- Techniques for reducing complex measurements to clear, comparable numbers, including spectroscopic methods and other standard experiments.

Ideal for readers who want a hands-on, lab-focused path through key physics ideas and who value learning by doing with standard tools.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Physics, desire to become acquainted with the principles and methods of accurate measurement. The large and increasing number of students, who have to be taught simultaneously in a Physical Laboratory, renders it necessary that the instructions supplied should be fairly complete ;and that the exercises should be of such a nature as to enable the teachers easily to check the accuracy of the results obtained. The exercises described in this volume have been worked through by several hundred students of theO wens College who were preparing for the ordinary degree of B.S c, and the experience thus gained has been utilised to improve the descriptions and methods adopted. It is hoped therefore that the volume will also prove useful in other laboratories. We have not aimed at completeness, being convinced that a student learns more by carefully working through a few selected and typical exercises, than by hurrying through large number, which are often but slight modifications of each other. The guiding principle we have adopted in our teaching htis been to attach greater importance to neat and accurate work, properly recorded, than to the number of experiments which a student performs. All Note-books are carefully kept, no slovenly work is allowed to pass, and each exercise is repeated until satisfactory results have been obtained.
