Synopsis
This book is set during the English Civil War and tells the adventurous story of Gwen Jones and Cecily Kemeys, who live on the Cefn Mably estate, owned by Sir Nicholas Kemeys, a staunch Royalist. Sir Nicholas is a brave and noble knight, and his actions set an example for others. Indeed, the author uses real-life historical characters and events as a backdrop to this historical novel, positioning the fictional characters as witnesses to actual historical events and weaving their lives around the true stories that shaped the British Civil War. Gwen, a young Welsh girl, is a keen observer, and the author uses her viewpoint to describe in rich detail the daily lives of the gentry, and peasantry at Cefn Mably. That said, this book is not only a story about war and politics, nor is it only a historical fiction. Cecily, the main character, is a gutsy and courageous young lady who takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, and her story is both inspirational and empowering.
