The author points out contradictions and omissions in the report. The book posits that the FTC unfairly targeted big packers during hearings that lacked balance. Alleged agreements among packers to divide the market were not continuous, as the FTC asserted. Further, such agreements would have had little bearing on the situation today. Evidence of price fixing in 1912 was not present in the FTC report, nor was evidence to suggest that collusion among packers has influenced live stock prices. The author concludes that the FTC report was biased and that the agency failed to prove a present-day monopoly in the meat-packing industry.
