New Tales of Old Rome uncovers how modern explorers peel back centuries of history beneath Rome's streets. It follows a new push to reach deeper, older layers of the city.
In this volume, the author describes a long-running campaign to study Rome’s buried past. The work goes beyond surface ruins to seek the earliest imperial, republican, and even prehistoric remains, all while protecting the higher structures that sit above them.
A central project centers on the Forum and nearby sites, where scholars compare new findings with earlier explorations and discuss what deeper layers reveal about Rome’s long history. The narrative blends field discoveries, careful excavation, and the challenges of urban archaeology in a living city.
Ideal for readers who want a concrete, accessible view of how archaeology uncovers Rome’s complex past.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores Rome's origins by unearthing archaeological and historical research conducted in the city. By drawing on discoveries from the Forum, the author sheds light on the founding of the city, the topography of ancient Rome, and the evolution of its sacred sites over the centuries. The author provokes thought on the nature of the city's religious practices and their influence on Roman society and politics, demonstrating how they reflected and shaped the city's history and development. At the heart of this book lies a groundbreaking discovery: the author presents evidence suggesting the identification of the cenotaph (sepulcrum inane) and national monument (heroon) of Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome. The author's examination of this site, coupled with a deep dive into ancient texts, offers new insights into Rome's earliest days, challenging established narratives and painting a vivid picture of the city's formative years.
